HoRNDIS (pronounce: “horrendous”) is a driver for Mac OS X that allows you to use your Android phone's native USB tethering mode to get Internet access. It is known to work with Mac OS X versions 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) through 10.14 (Mojave – see notes below), and has been tested on a wide variety of phones. Macbook pro 2015 update. Although you should be careful with all drivers that you install on your computer, HoRNDIS has been tested at least well enough for the author (and many others) to run full time on their own personal computers.

G4's above 1GHz tend to be USB 2.0 late model G4 Macs that are only able to run Mac OS 9 in Classic Mode from an OS X installed system (unless user modified). I think that one exception to that rule is the G4 Mirrored Drive Doors (2003) 1.25GHz FireWire 400 model. The Mac firmware is the first stored program that executes when you turn on a Mac computer. Its job is to check the computer's CPU, memory, disk drives and ports for errors. The PC equivalent to the Mac firmware is called BIOS, which stands for basic input-output systems. This is most likely because the host Mac was 1 or 2 OS Versions behind the Target Mac. The Host and Target Mac need to be on the same OS Version. If your Target Mac is on 10.15, then your Host Mac needs to be on 10.15. The OS Cannot be restored on this device. The operation couldn’t be completed. Mac OS X users should know that the location of their IPSW files can slightly vary based on the iOS device that’s the subject, but they should be residing in the home directory. /Library/iTunes/ Once inside the folder, search for the device you have to guide you to the IPSW download.
HoRNDIS is implemented as a kext, rather than as a user-space program that opens a TAP or TUN device; this means that it does not conflict with other TAP/TUN kexts that you might have installed (like OpenVPN, Tunnelblick, or Cisco VPN). The driver implements Microsoft's proprietary RNDIS protocol, which is the only protocol supported natively by Android devices; although Linux and Windows users have enjoyed native RNDIS drivers for years, Mac OS X supports only CDC Ethernet devices out of the box.1)

Other solutions either take over the phone's Wi-Fi stack without the Android operating system's knowledge, or create an emulation IP stack in userspace on the phone; in many cases, the built-in USB tethering support can be more stable, more reliable, and faster.2)
